The backyard project was a big focus for us the last few months- the old pool was demolished and a new one is being built! Project is still not finished, but we are in the “curing” phase and so much of the work is done! Pics below.
During construction there were some construction vehicles, like a Bobcat to move the earth. The chickens quickly investigated and within a day or so, Rock Star started laying eggs on the seat!
One highlight this fall was having Rachel, Elizabeth, Zach, and Connor come and visit! Everyone was game to do ALL the things…so we did barbeque, breweries, birdwatching, scorpion searching, hiking, shopping, etc.! What more could you ask for? Pics below.
There were a couple of workshops at the library which I led along with Aleigha, the librarian. So far we’ve introduced gelli printing and zine making. In January we will do embroidery on photographs and the following two months there will be other artists from the art league volunteering to lead a workshop. They always work out fine with several kids showing up, but no one ever RSVP’S so we never have any idea in advance what attendance will be. We’re hoping to improve on that :)
This fall my Dad had some growing health problems and so partially due to that I decided I should visit my parents and Raine at the end of October. This was over my birthday, and Rob also made the trip for the beginning couple of days! We had Nicole stay to watch the animals, which worked, although she said that they were still not comfortable with her (watching her from outside the house, growling, etc.) so that was discouraging.
Anyway, we had a nice time out in California. Big John was doing better than we expected, and one night we made a nice meal featuring steak which we noticed Big John ate heartily along with a glass of wine!! And I was able to spend a day with Raine so I could see her new apartment, which is terrific, have lunch out, and take a seashore walk to see weird sculptures! The lunch was like the best lunch EVER! Pics below.
Unfortunately, things got worse for my Dad so I went out again in November to be with Gma. Raine and Paige visited as well. At a certain point, Big John stayed at home and was under hospice care. My brother went out there after that, and my Dad died earlier this month. My brother is going to be with my Mom through Xmas (his family goes out for that too). I expect to visit my Mom again sometime this winter. As you know, this blog is about Austin goings-on and light-hearted, silly things so that’s all I’m going to say about my Dad’s passing.
There were some other happenings over the fall back here at home. I volunteered at a fundraising event called Goat Couture, which is basically a goat costume contest! I also volunteered at a master naturalist function and at my station we made “fossils” with the kids. The other thing I randomly helped with was designing a flyer for the Pound House Christmas event, which was pretty fun.
We also are now pretty sure Pangea is a boy, not a girl, because I saw a certain anatomical feature which would be shocking but luckily I had seen posts about it in the Sulcata social media groups so I kinda new what it was.
Check out this melanistic deer I saw this fall!
Rob has a new kitchen tool which can be used for various things, including pasta-making!! So now we enjoy freshly made pasta from time to time, YUM!! pics below
Rob and I also attended a wine tasting/dinner event at a local winery. It was sort of interesting, but not really. Actually that’s why it was funny that the owner ended up sitting next to me at the dinner, after I had not even listened to his talk earlier lol.
A few days ago I happened to notice something in the dirt in the yard- a handcarved spear or tip! They are common around here I think but it’s the first one I’ve found. It would be nice to have it identified, as in what era it is from, but we haven’t gotten far in that effort yet.
Sometime this fall I saw someone on social media post about having a kid camera that immediately spits out images. So I bought one ($30) and the images it creates are black & white and low fidelity. They seeemed sort of spooky to me so I made a little Halloween zine with them. Then I was thinking of other uses and so I decided to make a tarot deck. Well, a standard tarot deck, I learned, has over 70 cards so this is kind of a large undertaking. But then, I have the time! So when I go places I try to remember to bring the camera and then randomly ask people if I can take their pics. I’m developing the design in Canva. Still a ways to go.
Another digital design I have going on is a Hill Country Advent Calendar. I made a design but I wasn’t sure how to go about cutting the flaps. A friend recommended a printer she knows, and after working out the numbers, I realized that even with a custom die cut, I could make 50 of them and sell each for say $10 and it would more then cover the cost! WOW! So I already have a mock up from him and I just need to review it and make any tweaks before finalizing. I realize this is an odd time of year to do this, but I had the momentum and I don’t want to set it aside for 10 months now!
And then there’s all the other art I have floating around here. There’s gelli prints, prints with embroidery, and then I also made a bunch of sketchbooks with watercolor paper, bracelets from Job’s tears, etc. I had planned my second art market at Jester King, but that conflicted with my trips, so I decided very last minute to do an art market at the “triangle” in Dripping Springs. This went pretty well, although there were far fewer people there than at the brewery event. I had a few people that were very complimentary about my stuff, including a photographer who offered to help me promote my art free of charge! Then I also sold things at an open house that Jennifer hosted this week. Between the two events, I did sell about $850 worth of art, so that’s good.
I was sort of hoping that after the market I’d get an idea of what things people are interested in. Turns out that didn’t really happen because the interest was spread around. Well, most people didn’t care about the bracelets, which surprised me- I wonder if they were not presented well? Maybe it is because they aren’t sparkly? Or overpriced? Or because they were strung on elastic? Not sure. But the other stuff got attention: gelli prints with embroidery, rusty object-created pieces, nicer sketchbooks, cheaper booklets, botanical prints, and the cut-up faces. Actually there is one cut-up face that came out well that gets A LOT of attention. I can put a pic of it below (not a very good pic sorry). I also did end up selling the mashup of John Travolta and Barbra Streisand (with orange shag rug fringe) which I’ll kinda miss haha.
So anyway, not sure where that leaves me but whatever I’ll just make whatever I want to make. I signed up for a class I hope to start this winter which is actually centered around gelli printing, but the instructor is a designer/artist and I think the course is about a lot more than gelli printing. And if only I could get my hands on more books with faces, I always like to cut up faces! And I probably will do some more crumpled paper with embroidery.
A few more pics below.
